National Fall Prevention Week 2026

As a caregiver, it can be overwhelming and costly to determine where to begin to reduce falls. Let's start with the home environment. When you're not personally affected by these issues, it may be challenging to identify the high-risk areas that can be addressed with minimal expense and no special skills. While adding a ramp may prove highly beneficial, something as simple as a $10 night light with a motion sensor between the bed and bathroom could prevent a serious slip, trip, or fall during nighttime.

The chart shows suggested Home Fall Prevention Modifications divided into three skill levels along with a range of costs to complete. When approached from this perspective, caregivers can make an informed decision for a cost-effective impact.

For areas that are expensive and necessitate advanced skills, it is important to develop an organized plan that allows caregivers to prepare while also identifying the required resources and organizations that can aid in covering some of the costs.

There are excellent programs available, including those offered by health insurance providers, Medicaid Advantage, government programs (VA and AAA), and more, which can help offset many of the listed modifications.
